About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, with a real scholar guide, genuine Belvedere Palace and museum collection. This is a private tour for your group only, with a genuine scholar guide, just your party. Real content covers the Belvedere Palace and its museum collection.

The Belvedere was built for Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Habsburg empire's most celebrated military commander, with the Lower Belvedere constructed first — work was already underway by 1712 — as his private summer retreat, before the grander Upper Belvedere followed between 1717 and 1723 as a formal reception palace. Both were designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, the architect Eugene personally chose to realize an estate befitting his standing.

The two palaces, their Orangery, the Palace Stables, and the formal Baroque garden connecting them form one of the most complete aristocratic complexes to survive from Habsburg Vienna — a scale that reflects Eugene's own outsized wealth and influence rather than any direct royal commission.

A guide who knows the building's own history, not just the paintings inside it, can trace how a general's private estate became a public museum: today the Belvedere holds the world's largest Klimt collection alongside major works of Austrian art spanning the medieval period to the 20th century, all inside rooms originally built for an 18th-century soldier-prince's entertaining.
