About This Tour

Gustav Klimt painted The Kiss across 1907 and 1908, at the height of what is now called his "Golden Period" — a stretch of work defined by the lavish use of gold leaf, here combined with silver and platinum laid directly onto the 180-by-180-centimetre canvas. It was first shown publicly in 1908 under a different title, Liebespaar ("The Lovers"), at Vienna's Kunstschau exhibition.
The reception was immediate: while the painting was still unfinished and on exhibition, the Austrian government bought it for 25,000 crowns for the newly founded Moderne Galerie, which had opened in the Lower Belvedere only a few years earlier — meaning the state acquired what would become Klimt's most famous work before he had even completed it.
Stylistically, the painting sits at the center of the Vienna Secession, the breakaway movement Klimt co-founded against Vienna's conservative academic art establishment. Its couple, wrapped in flowing, ornamented robes, fuses the organic linework of Art Nouveau with a decorative gold-ground intensity that has made it the single image most people now associate with turn-of-the-century Vienna.
