The Albertina's story starts in 1776, when Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen — a son-in-law of Empress Maria Theresa — received a gift of 10,000 engravings from Count Giacomo Durazzo, Austria's envoy in Venice. That gift is traditionally counted as the founding moment of the collection. By the time Duke Albert died in 1822, having lived in the palace since 1794, it had grown to roughly 14,000 drawings and 200,000 prints. Today the Albertina's graphic collection holds more than a million prints and drawings, making it one of the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.
Its single most famous holding is Albrecht Dürer's watercolour "Young Hare," part of a Dürer collection of nearly 140 works whose ownership can be traced, without a single gap, all the way back to 1528 — an almost unheard-of level of documented provenance for a Renaissance drawing.
The museum itself occupies the Albertina Palace, a former Habsburg residence built on top of one of the city's old bastions and home to the museum since 1805. Alongside the historical graphic collection, the Albertina's Batliner Collection brings the story into the 20th century with Impressionist and modern works, including real paintings by Monet and Picasso — a genuine range from 15th-century drawing to modern painting under one roof.
Your guide moves between these centuries at a pace set entirely by your own group, which matters here more than almost anywhere else in Vienna: works on paper this old and this light-sensitive are only displayed in careful rotation, so what's on the wall during your visit is itself a real, changing part of how the collection is managed.
