Lake Bled's island church has one of the more layered architectural histories in the region. Local legend holds that a temple to the Slavic goddess Živa once stood on the same tiny island long before Christianity arrived; the first recorded masonry church there, a Romanesque basilica, was dedicated in 1142, rebuilt in Gothic style in 1465, damaged by an earthquake in 1509, and rebuilt again more than once since — the current building, with its roughly 52-meter Baroque bell tower, is the result of that long chain of repair and renewal.
Bled Castle, perched some 130 meters above the lake's northeastern shore, is considered Slovenia's oldest castle — first mentioned in historical records in the 11th century, making it close to a thousand years old, and still commanding the best view over the lake and island below.
Triglav National Park, which the tour's route skirts, is Slovenia's only national park, established in its current form in 1981 and named for Mount Triglav — at 2,864 meters, the highest peak in the country and arguably its single most recognizable national symbol.
