St. Mark's Campanile began as a 9th- or 10th-century watchtower, built to spot approaching ships and guard the entrance to the city; its bronze-sheathed spire, added in the early 16th century, doubled as a daytime beacon, catching sunlight visible to sailors well out in the lagoon. At 98.6 meters, it's still the tallest structure in Venice and is nicknamed "el paròn de casa" — the master of the house — by locals.

On the morning of 14 July 1902, days after a crack appeared in one of its walls, the entire tower collapsed into rubble — remarkably, without a single injury. Venice's authorities approved funding for an exact rebuild that same evening, and the new campanile, reinforced internally and fitted with a lift, was inaugurated a decade later, on 25 April 1912, St. Mark's own feast day. The tower standing today, and the view from its top, is that careful 1912 reconstruction, not the original medieval structure.
