Venice has no streets built for wheeled traffic — for most of its history, the Grand Canal functioned as the city's actual main street, the route everything and everyone moved along. It traces a long reverse-S through the center of the city, about 3.8 kilometers end to end, and for centuries its banks were where Venetian families chose to build, each palace a visible statement of whatever fortune had built it.
