The Grand Canal isn't actually straight — it winds through the city in a wide, elegant S-curve for roughly 3.8 kilometers, lined along its length by somewhere around 170 historic buildings dating from the 13th to the 18th century, many of them grand family palaces built specifically to be seen and admired from the water rather than from the narrower street running along behind them.
