St. Mark's Square has been Venice's civic heart since the 9th century, when the first basilica went up to house relics of St. Mark the Evangelist; the five-domed building visible today dates largely from an 11th-century rebuilding and is decorated with mosaics and marble brought back from Byzantium and the eastern Mediterranean. The Rialto Bridge, a short walk away, has spanned the Grand Canal in some form since the area became Venice's commercial center in the 11th century — the stone bridge standing today replaced a wooden drawbridge in the 1590s.
Lunch happens on Murano, Venice's glassmaking island since 1291, when the Senate ordered every furnace moved there to protect the city's wooden buildings from fire — and, just as importantly, to keep the Republic's glassmaking secrets contained on one island its glassblowers were forbidden to leave. Watching a working glass factory today is a direct link to that history: the same techniques developed under those restrictions, like gold-flecked aventurine and clear "cristallo" glass, are still what Murano's workshops are known for.
