Venetian tradition dates the city's founding to noon on March 25, 421, with the dedication of a church on the Rialto — the same spot where the parish of San Giacomo di Rialto stands today. It's a tidy legend, repeated for centuries, though modern historians are skeptical: archaeological evidence suggests the Rialto wasn't properly settled and urbanized until centuries later, closer to the 9th century.
