The Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene earned their UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019, becoming Italy's 55th site on the list — not for any single building, but for an entire working landscape. The hills are shaped by "ciglioni," steep grassy terraces that generations of farmers carved into the slopes to make the vines plantable, a technique that's both protected biodiversity and given the region its distinctive striped look from above.
The grape behind it all is Glera, the variety that forms the base of every bottle of real Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG. Unlike Champagne, Prosecco gets its bubbles from a second fermentation done in large pressurized tanks rather than in individual bottles — the Charmat, or Martinotti, method — which is part of why it comes out brighter, fruitier, and faster to produce than its French counterpart.
This private day trip pairs that real geography and winemaking with two genuinely different tastings: an outdoor DOCG tasting with cured meats and cheese, a full lunch overlooking the hills, and a second stop at a small family-run winery for a more technical tasting using the region's original grape varieties — a fuller picture of Prosecco than a single glass back in Venice ever gives you.
