For most of Venice's history, a gondola wasn't a novelty — it was simply how people got around, and became as much a meeting point for business and romance along the way as a mode of transport. That everyday boat has since become something far rarer: Venice is thought to have had as many as 10,000 gondolas at its peak in the late 15th century, compared to roughly 400 licensed gondoliers working today. What was once unremarkable is now, by comparison, a genuinely uncommon sight to be photographed in.
Piazza San Marco, one of the stops on this shoot, has long drawn outsized praise — it's often credited, without firm proof, to Napoleon's description of it as 'the drawing room of Europe,' a line historians now think may actually belong to the writer Alfred de Musset instead. Whoever said it first, the square has earned the reputation.
Your photographer works both locations — Piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale on foot, then the gondola itself — framing the 30-minute ride so the city's architecture, rather than just your group, does a lot of the visual work.
