Venice and its lagoon were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site together in 1987, and it's worth remembering the lagoon is the larger half of that designation — a roughly 550-square-kilometer wetland where only about a tenth is open water, with the rest made up of mudflats, salt marshes, and the shallow tidal channels, called "ghebi," that this kayak tour actually follows. Most visitors never see this part of it at all, since none of it is reachable by any boat with a motor or a draft deeper than a kayak's.
A stop at the Rowing Association Vogaepara digs into the mechanics behind Venetian rowing, including the forcola — the carved wooden oarlock every gondola uses — whose oddly complicated shape actually allows one oar to do everything a rudder, a paddle, and a brake would normally handle separately, depending on exactly where along its curves the oar happens to be braced at any given moment.
The route also reaches Torcello, the lagoon's oldest settled island, along the way — a slower, quieter way to arrive there than by motorboat, fitting for an island whose own history has always moved at the pace of silt and tide rather than any fixed schedule or timetable at all.
