A gondola isn't actually symmetrical — look closely and the left side of the hull is noticeably wider than the right, by roughly 23 centimeters. That asymmetry is deliberate: since a gondolier rows with a single oar from a fixed position on the right side, the boat would naturally pull left with every stroke. Building the hull wider and slightly curved on that side creates just enough resistance to cancel the pull out, letting one person steer and propel an 11-meter boat with a single long oar and no rudder at all.
The gondolier's guild itself dates back to 1094, and for most of that history it was an entirely male profession. That changed in August 2010, when Giorgia Boscolo — a 24-year-old who'd been rowing since she was seven — became the first woman to pass the guild's full licensing exam, after roughly 400 hours of training in rowing technique, canal routes, and the trade's finer points, tested by a panel from the centuries-old Gondoliers' Guild itself.
This private ride is reserved for your group alone, with your gondolier choosing a route through the city's quieter back canals rather than the busiest tourist stretches — past palace facades and small parish churches that most shared gondola trips, run on a fixed schedule and route, never get the time to detour toward. Booking ahead locks in your seats, so there's no haggling over price at the dock once you arrive.
