The Doge's Palace, where much of this treasure hunt unfolds, was Venice's seat of government for more than four centuries — home to the Doge, the city's elected ruler, and to the courts, prison, and administrative offices that ran the Republic until it fell in 1797. The building's oldest parts date back to the 10th or 11th century, though most of what's visible today was built between 1340 and 1424. Kids chasing clues through its halls are walking the same rooms where Venice's actual government once met.
St. Mark's Basilica, the hunt's other main stop, began as a 9th-century church built to house the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, and the five-domed building standing today — covered in mosaics and marble shipped back from the eastern Mediterranean — is largely an 11th-century rebuild. Framing a visit to two buildings this old as a hunt for clues and riddles is a real, low-key way to keep younger travelers curious rather than clock-watching through a long sightseeing day.
