Frequently Asked Questions

It's related but distinctly Venetian — the local version centers on an ombra (a small glass of wine) and cicchetti (bar snacks) taken standing at a bacaro, a tradition that predates how "aperitivo" is used elsewhere in Italy.

About This Tour

A private tour focused on the Italian traditions of aperitivo and cicchetti in Cannaregio, with your local host providing culinary history and tailoring bar selections and commentary to your tastes.

The word "bacaro," for the small bars this tour hops between, is newer than the tradition itself — it only came into use after Venice joined the Italian state in 1866, borrowed from Venetian dialect for making noise or having a good time. The bars themselves go back much further: by the 1300s, more than twenty of them already clustered around the Rialto Bridge, serving wine by the "ombra," a small glass whose name most likely just means a scant, modest pour.

Cicchetti, the bar snacks that go with it — fried seafood, boiled eggs with sardine, bread topped with bacalà — probably take their name from the Latin "ciccus," a small quantity, which is exactly the point: a few bites at each stop rather than a sit-down meal. Doing this in Cannaregio instead of the Rialto puts you in Venice's largest and most residential sestiere, where bacari still mostly serve neighbors rather than visitors, and where a host who actually drinks here regularly can steer the order toward what's good that particular day.
