The Venetian Senate moved every glass furnace to Murano in 1291, officially over fire risk to the city's wooden buildings — though keeping glassblowers on one island also let the Republic control the trade and protect its techniques from rival cities.

About This Tour

A private speedboat picks you up directly from your hotel to explore Murano, the home of the glass masters, and Burano, the colorful fisherman village. A private day tour to Murano and Burano with a private speedboat that picks you up directly from your hotel, so there's no need to navigate to a meeting point in Venice.

Murano's story starts with fire safety. In 1291 the Venetian Senate ordered every glass furnace moved off the main island onto Murano, worried that the Republic's wooden buildings were one spark away from disaster. The real motive ran deeper than safety, though — gathering every glassblower on one island let Venice guard its trade secrets, and for generations Murano's craftsmen were forbidden to leave without permission. Their isolation produced real breakthroughs still prized today, from gold-flecked aventurine glass to the clear "cristallo" that made Venetian glass famous across Europe.

Burano, the second stop, tells a gentler story. Its lace-making tradition took off in the 15th century and stayed, by most accounts, the finest in Italy for roughly three centuries — legend even has Leonardo da Vinci shopping there for lace to adorn Milan's cathedral altar. The island's rainbow-painted houses are usually explained as a practical fix for the lagoon's thick fog: bright, distinct colors supposedly helped fishermen spot their own front door from the water. The palette isn't random either — homeowners still need permission before repainting, choosing from an approved list of shades.
