About This Tour

Venture with a private guide to corners of Venice most tourists never see after dark, listening to tales of ghouls and spirits, then finish with a scenic gondola ride. A private after-dark tour exploring quiet alleyways and brooding palaces, listening to tales of ghouls and spirits from Venice's past, finishing with a scenic gondola ride along the canals.

Gondolas have existed in some form since at least the 11th century — the word itself first appears in writing in 1094 — and by the 17th and 18th centuries, as many as eight to ten thousand of them crowded Venice's canals. Only around 400 remain in active service today, nearly all of them, like this one, used for hire rather than private transport. Every gondola on the water is painted the same glossy black, a rule that traces back to a 1562 sumptuary law cracking down on Venetian nobles who'd been competing to out-decorate each other's boats.

The one decoration still allowed is the ferro, the curved metal prow ornament whose six forward-facing prongs are usually said to represent Venice's six historic sestieri. After-dark ghost stories about brooding palaces and quiet alleyways are, fittingly, a Venetian tradition in their own right — the city has centuries of plague, intrigue, and shadowy politics to draw real stories from — making a nighttime gondola ride less a tourist add-on than a genuinely old way to end an evening here.
