The Doge's Palace took its current shape gradually: construction on this site began in the 14th century, with the wing facing the Piazzetta added around 1424, though an earlier palace had stood here since the 10th or 11th century. It served as home to the Doge, Venice's elected head of state, and as the Republic's seat of government, courts, and prison, right up until Venice fell to Napoleon in 1797. St. Mark's Basilica next door dates to the 9th century in origin, though the five-domed building seen today is largely an 11th-century rebuild.
The Grand Canal itself traces an inverted S for roughly 3.8 kilometers through the city, following the path of an old river channel that once fed the lagoon — a route lined by some 170 to 200 historic palazzi built across six centuries, in styles running from Byzantine to Gothic to Baroque. Seeing that stretch from the water, after walking the quieter backstreets on foot, is the closest thing Venice has to viewing its own history in chronological order, one facade at a time.
