The Rialto Market has been Venice's commercial heart since the Republic moved its principal market there at the end of the 11th century. Today it's still split by product the way it was centuries ago — the Erberia for fruit and vegetables, the Pescheria for fish, housed since 1907 in a dedicated neo-Gothic market hall right on the water's edge — making it one of the longest continuously operating marketplaces in Europe, and a genuinely working market rather than a preserved-for-tourists version of one.
Nearby, the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is one of the city's great Gothic churches, and home to Titian's monumental altarpiece "Assumption of the Virgin" above its high altar — reason enough that art historians rank it alongside St. Mark's as one of Venice's essential interiors, even though this particular tour takes it in from the outside as a pass-by stop on the way to the next landmark.
La Fenice, Venice's opera house, has a name that means "the phoenix" — a deliberate choice by the noble families who built it in 1790 after losing their previous theater to fire. The symbolism turned out to be prophetic: the house burned again in 1836 and was rebuilt within a year, then burned a third time in a 1996 arson attack before reopening in 2004, rebuilt to match its 19th-century appearance using old photographs for reference.
A fixed itinerary of landmarks like these still leaves room for your guide to shape the pace around what interests you most, since this remains a private walking tour rather than a scheduled group departure moving everyone along on the same timetable, stop by stop, with no time to linger anywhere.
