Venice's ghost stories tend to trace back to real history rather than invented ones. The city was hit hard twice by plague — in 1575-77, an outbreak that killed roughly a third of the population, and again in 1630-31, with a similarly devastating toll. Both left permanent marks: the Senate vowed to build the Basilica del Redentore in thanks when the first plague finally ended in 1577, an event Venice still marks every July with the Festa del Redentore, and the Basilica della Madonna della Salute was begun in 1631 for the same reason after the second.
One of the evening's recurring local legends centers on Palazzo Dario, a late-15th-century palace on the Grand Canal built for the senator Giovanni Dario. A long-running local saying claims the palace brings bereavement, bankruptcy, or death to anyone connected to it — a legend that's stuck around for centuries because of a genuine string of tragedies among its owners, from a 15th-century suicide and a violent death in the same family to a sudden fall and a murder in more recent decades. Your guide tells it as the folklore it is, not as settled fact.
After dark, with the crowds gone and the light down to lanterns and reflections off the water, these stories land differently than they would at noon — which is really the point of doing this walk in the evening rather than during the day.
