Lake Braies — Pragser Wildsee, if you're coming from the German-speaking side of South Tyrol — formed when a landslide dammed the Prags River, creating a basin that now sits at roughly 1,496 meters above sea level and reaches up to 36 meters deep. It lies inside the Fanes-Senes-Braies natural park, part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2009, and its still, turquoise water framed by cliffs and fir forest has made it one of the most photographed lakes anywhere in the Alps.
Cortina d'Ampezzo, the alpine town this trip also takes in, hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics — Italy's first turn as an Olympic host of any kind. It's set to host again in February 2026, this time sharing duties with Milan as part of the Milano-Cortina Games, which will make Cortina the first Italian town ever to host the Winter Olympics twice. Seventy years on, it's still recognizably the same alpine resort that made its name on the world stage in 1956.
Covering both places from Venice usually means planning an overnight stay in the Dolomites. This trip compresses that same round trip into a single long day, so you still see the lakes and peaks that normally require an extra night away, then return to Venice by evening.
