St. Mark's Basilica has been nicknamed the 'Chiesa d'Oro,' the Church of Gold, since the 11th century, for the roughly 8,000 square meters of gold-ground mosaics covering its domes, vaults, and upper walls. They weren't all made at once — the oldest sections, above the choir, date to around 1160, while later panels were redesigned between 1500 and 1750 by artists including Titian and Tintoretto, so what's overhead represents close to eight centuries of continuous artistic work rather than a single commission.
The Doge's Palace next door served as the seat of government for the Venetian Republic for over a thousand years, from the election of the first doge in 697 until the last one abdicated in 1797. Its grand council halls and the cramped prison cells used to hold the Republic's own prisoners sit within a short walk of each other inside the same building.
Seeing both after the day's crowds have cleared out changes the experience considerably — the mosaics catch the light differently in the quiet, and there's room to actually stand still in front of them rather than being carried along by a line.
