Before 1807, burials in Venice happened within the city itself — a practice Napoleonic occupiers decreed unsanitary, ordering them moved to a dedicated island instead. San Cristoforo, designed by architect Gian Antonio Selva, was chosen for the job; in 1836 the narrow canal separating it from the neighboring island was filled in, and the combined land became what's known today simply as San Michele.
The cemetery's most recognizable residents are composer Igor Stravinsky and poet Ezra Pound, both laid to rest here thanks to their own deep connections to the city — but the far greater number of tombs belong to generations of Venetians known only to their own families, which is part of what gives the island its particular stillness.
Cypress trees line the grounds, and the short boat ride over from Piazzale Roma makes the contrast with Venice's bustling streets feel immediate — a genuinely peaceful, reflective side of the city that most itineraries skip entirely, with your licensed guide pointing out inscriptions and family histories a solo wander past the gates would never reveal.
