About This Tour

A private tour covering the city and Murano on foot and by boat, visiting St. Mark's Basilica and watching Murano's glassmakers at work, with hotel pickup included. A private tour fitting both Venice's main island and the lagoon into one route, visiting St. Mark's Basilica, watching Murano's glassmakers at work, with an art historian connecting it all and hotel pickup included.

St. Mark's Basilica anchors the city side of this route — founded in the 9th century to house the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist, its current five-domed form dates largely from an 11th-century rebuild, with mosaics and marble brought back from Constantinople, Egypt, and the Levant by Venetian traders. It's the building most people picture when they picture Venice, and seeing it with an art historian on hand turns the gold mosaics from decoration into a readable record of where Venice's wealth actually came from.

Murano, out in the lagoon, tells the other half of that trading story. The island became Venice's glassmaking center in 1291, after the Senate ordered every furnace moved there to limit fire risk — and, just as usefully, to keep the glassblowers' techniques from leaking to rival cities. Watching a glassmaker at work on Murano today is watching a trade that was, for centuries, legally forbidden to leave this one island; the gold-flecked and crystal-clear glass styles developed under that isolation are still what the island is known for.
