Gondolas were once everywhere in Venice — by some estimates, as many as 10,000 of them worked the canals at the city's peak in the late 15th century, when they were simply the way everyone and everything moved around. That number has fallen dramatically since; Venice now counts only around 400 licensed gondoliers, and gondolas themselves have shifted almost entirely from daily transport to a deliberate, booked experience.
