Cachagua Island is a small islet of roughly 4.5 hectares off the beach of Cachagua, declared a Sanctuary of Nature in 1979 and a Natural Monument in 1989. It is known popularly as the Island of Penguins.
It hosts one of Chile's most important Humboldt penguin colonies, a reproductive population estimated to fluctuate between about 600 and 1,800 birds, along with sea lions and many seabirds. Landing is not allowed, so watching from a boat is how visitors see it, and penguins are most often seen nesting from roughly September to April.
Conservation work is ongoing: the municipality of Zapallar has signed an agreement with Island Conservation to remove invasive species and raise community awareness.
