The name Ucluelet comes from Yuułuʔił, usually translated as 'people of the safe harbour' in the Nuu-chah-nulth language. The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ have lived here for at least 4,300 years, according to the sources consulted.
The harbour earned its name. The original Ucluelet cove, near Portland Point, is described as the only safe landing place in rough weather between Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds. Captain James Barkley reached the area in 1787 seeking sea otter pelts, and fur sealers and later settlers arrived from the 1870s, drawn by fish and timber.
Today the town is small, with a 2021 population of 2,066, and its harbour is still tied to fishing. A boat tour shows that working waterfront from the water, with the forested shoreline behind it.
