Toledo isn't just old — for long stretches of Spanish history, it was genuinely the center of political power on the peninsula. It served as the capital of the Visigothic kingdom from 542 to 725 AD, and centuries later, under the Castilian crown and briefly under Charles V in the 16th century, it functioned again as the seat of royal government, before Philip II moved the royal court to Madrid in 1561 in search of a more centrally located capital. That shift is really why Toledo feels frozen at a particular historical moment today — once the court left, the city's physical growth largely stopped, leaving its medieval street plan remarkably intact.
A flexible-length walking tour suits Toledo particularly well because the old town is genuinely compact but genuinely dense — narrow medieval streets wind past Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance buildings in quick succession, and it's easy to either rush past real highlights or get stuck circling the same few blocks without a guide's sense of the layout.
Choosing your own route length means this works as either a tight highlights walk hitting the cathedral exterior, the main plazas, and a scenic river viewpoint, or a longer, slower route into Toledo's quieter corners — former Jewish quarter lanes, small workshops still producing the city's traditional damascene steel and sword craftsmanship, and viewpoints across the Tagus gorge that most rushed day-trippers never reach.
