Surfing in Tofino goes back to the 1960s; a small surf school operated on Long Beach in the summer of 1968, and the sport grew after the newly paved Highway 4 reached the coast around 1971. By the mid-1970s regular groups were surfing here in spring and summer.
Chesterman Beach is described as Canada's most popular beach for learning to surf, and Outside magazine called it one of the best beginner breaks in North America in 2010. Its gentle, sloping sand and long rolling waves are a big part of why.
The water is cold year-round, rarely climbing above about 13.8 C even in summer and dropping to 8 to 10 C in winter, so a full wetsuit is essential, which is why one is included.
