Candid photography suits Tofino because the setting does much of the work. Clayoquot Sound, which includes the beaches and rainforest around town, was named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in January 2000 for its natural and cultural richness.
Real emotion tends to show up in unscripted moments: kids chasing the surf line, a couple walking a wide, empty beach, a laugh when a wave catches someone's boots. Wide sand flats and shifting light give a documentary-style photographer plenty to work with.
Expect cool, changeable conditions even in summer, since ocean temperatures here rarely climb much above about 14 C. Layers and a relaxed attitude to weather usually make for the most natural pictures.
