Valle de Guadalupe is the heart of Mexican wine, producing most of the country's output by commonly cited estimates of 70 to 90 percent. It has a Mediterranean-type climate moderated by Pacific sea breezes and fog. The valley grew from about 6 wineries in 1999 to over 150 by 2023, which is why a custom itinerary has so many options.
Its modern wine history has a surprising chapter: Russian Molokans, pacifist Christians who fled Russia, began settling in the valley from 1905, bought land, built a church and planted grapes, at first mainly for their own use. The area's older winemaking tradition goes back to the Santo Tomás mission lands, whose estate became a commercial winery in 1888.
