Tayrona's bays are a chain of coves between rocky headlands, and Granate, also called Garnet Bay, is described as the first bay of the park when sailing from Santa Marta. Concha Bay is the closest of the park's bays to the city, so boat itineraries often mention both.
Arriving by water also fits the park's own history. Tayrona was created on 24 April 1964, and access rules are set with Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada, who ask for periodic closures. Tayrona National Park has followed a recurring closure schedule at the request of the Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada (reported as 1-15 February, 1-15 June and 19 October-2 November in recent years), so dates should be confirmed before booking.
The captain may adjust the bay depending on weather and sea state, which is routine here, and a sunset return means you finish with the Santa Marta coastline and hills lit from the sea.
