Tayrona National Park was established on 24 April 1964 and covers roughly 150 km2 of land plus around 30 km2 of marine area, where Sierra Nevada foothills drop straight into the Caribbean. The trail to Cabo San Juan crosses that transition from forest to beach, and its beaches sit within a protected zone that is also sacred land to the Indigenous peoples of the range.
Cabo San Juan is known for a sheltered natural lagoon good for swimming and for the small lookout hut on a rocky outcrop, among the most photographed views on Colombia's coast. Other nearby beaches on the way, including Arenilla and La Piscina, are widely noted as having strong currents in places, so swimming spots are chosen by the guide rather than by looks alone.
The park closes periodically for environmental and spiritual restoration requested by Indigenous communities. Tayrona National Park has followed a recurring closure schedule at the request of the Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada (reported as 1-15 February, 1-15 June and 19 October-2 November in recent years), so dates should be confirmed before booking.
