Starting from Minca changes the day: you leave the cool foothills at around 650 m and descend to a Caribbean beach by road before walking, so the hike feels like crossing the whole Sierra Nevada-to-sea gradient in a single day. Tayrona National Park itself was established on 24 April 1964 and protects roughly 150 km2 of land.
Cabo San Juan is known for a sheltered lagoon good for swimming and a small hut on a rock above the water, among Colombia's most photographed viewpoints. The 12 to 15 km hike is long enough that early starts and steady pacing matter more than speed.
The park closes periodically at the request of Indigenous communities, so confirm dates. Tayrona National Park has followed a recurring closure schedule at the request of the Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada (reported as 1-15 February, 1-15 June and 19 October-2 November in recent years), so dates should be confirmed before booking.
