The Kiama Blowhole is a real geological landmark, not just a scenic photo stop — it's widely cited as the largest blowhole of its kind in the world, with its 2.5-metre opening in the rock face capable of sending plumes of seawater more than 30 metres into the air under the right swell conditions. The formation began with volcanic lava laid down more than 260 million years ago, later eroded by the ocean carving out the softer surrounding rock to leave the vertical shaft that produces the eruption today. European sightings date back to December 1797, when navigator George Bass anchored nearby, though local Aboriginal people had long known the feature as Khanterinte.
Sea Cliff Bridge, another real stop on this route, is a more recent but genuinely significant piece of engineering: a balanced cantilever bridge built in 2004-2005 to replace a stretch of coastal road that had been permanently closed in 2003 after repeated rockfalls, at a construction cost of roughly A$52 million. It links the villages of Coalcliff and Clifton along a dramatic stretch of coastline south of Sydney.
Minnamurra Rainforest, further along the itinerary, is a genuine remnant of subtropical rainforest — among the southernmost examples of this rainforest type found anywhere in eastern Australia — protected within Budderoo National Park and reached via a boardwalk through centuries-old forest, a markedly different landscape from the rest of the day's coastal stops.
