Watsons Bay, the heart of this tour, takes its name from Robert Watson, appointed Sydney's harbour pilot and harbourmaster in 1811 and the first superintendent of Macquarie Lighthouse from 1816. Long before that, the Cadigal people who lived around the bay knew it as Kutti, fishing its waters and gathering shellfish from Camp Cove nearby — a use of the area that predates European settlement by thousands of years.
For much of the 19th century Watsons Bay stayed a genuinely isolated fishing village — its population grew from around three dozen people in 1828 to just 122 by 1841 — and it wasn't until subdivision began in the 1850s and a regular ferry service opened in the 1870s that hotels and visitors started arriving in any number. The Gap, the dramatic sandstone cliff on the bay's ocean side, has drawn sightseers for just as long, prized for its real views toward Manly and North Head.
Rose Bay, the other real cove on this route, sits closer to the city and has its own layered history as a seaplane base and one of Sydney's more sheltered, tree-lined harbour inlets. Ending the day at Bondi Beach — whose Dharawal name is thought to describe the sound of surf breaking over rocks — makes for a real contrast: a short drive from quiet, village-like coves to one of the busiest, most recognisable beaches in the world.
