Port Stephens has built its reputation as the "Dolphin Capital of Australia" on genuine, long-studied resident wildlife rather than marketing alone. Research tracking individually recognisable dolphins has put the resident bottlenose dolphin population at roughly 90 to 160 individuals depending on the season and survey method, making it one of the most consistently documented resident dolphin populations anywhere on the Australian coast — a real part of why boat-based dolphin watching here has such a strong track record of actual sightings rather than hopeful searching.
The bay sits alongside another genuine natural feature: Stockton Bight, a 32-kilometre stretch of sand dunes running from Birubi Beach to Newcastle, recognised as the largest system of moving coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. The dunes reach over 30 metres in height, cover around 4,200 hectares, and hold real cultural significance for the Worimi people, the traditional custodians of the area, whose shell middens here date back tens of thousands of years.
That combination — a bay with a well-documented resident dolphin population next to a genuinely unique dune system — is what this day trip is built around, with the Nelson Bay cruise and Anna Bay sandboarding or camel-ride options letting a group experience both from Sydney in a single day.
