About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, exploring Newtown and Enmore's genuine shops, bars, and restaurants. This is a private tour for your group only, through the real eclectic streets of Newtown and Enmore — genuine independent shops, bars, and restaurants.

King Street, the spine of this walk, owes much of its character to the arrival of the railway. Newtown Station opened in 1855, and the tram lines that followed in the 1880s turned the strip into a genuinely significant retail area — by the end of the 19th century, King Street's shopping was reputed to rival Sydney's own city centre, built on the late-Victorian terraces and shopfronts that still line much of the route today.

For decades afterward, Newtown stayed a working-class suburb built around nearby factories, warehouses, and the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. The shift toward the bohemian, eclectic character the area is known for now really took hold in the 1960s and 70s, as university students and others drawn to a cheaper, more alternative lifestyle moved in — a transformation that continued through subsequent waves of gentrification without fully displacing the area's eccentric reputation.

Enmore, Newtown's immediate neighbour on this walk, shares that same layered history and is anchored by the Enmore Theatre, a long-standing local institution. Today both suburbs are genuinely diverse — a real mix of students, long-term working-class residents, LGBTQ+ community members, and newer arrivals — reflected in the area's independent shops, bars, and restaurants rather than in any single defining identity.
