Mount Panorama is a genuinely unusual piece of motorsport infrastructure: a 6.213-kilometre circuit built in 1938, originally conceived as a scenic tourist road around the mountain rather than a racetrack. For most of the year it functions exactly as that — an ordinary public road, open to everyday traffic, with houses that can only be reached by driving sections of what becomes a closed racing circuit on event weekends.
That dual identity is what makes it famous. The circuit has hosted Australia's best-known motor race since 1963, when the event (then run as the Armstrong 500) moved to Bathurst from Phillip Island in Victoria; the race was lengthened and renamed the Bathurst 1000 in 1973 following Australia's switch to metric measurement. It remains one of the most demanding circuits in world motorsport, climbing the mountain's steep sections before dropping back down to the main straight.
Bathurst itself holds a separate, genuine distinction: proclaimed a town by Governor Lachlan Macquarie on 7 May 1815, it's recognised as Australia's oldest inland township, established not long after explorers first found a route across the Blue Mountains. Combining a lap of the circuit and the National Motor Racing Museum with that real colonial history — on a route that also crosses the Blue Mountains along the way — gives this tour a niche that no other Sydney day trip covers.
