Few stops on this tour carry as much real history as Mrs Macquarie's Chair, a bench hand-carved directly into the sandstone headland in 1810 by convict labourers, commissioned for Elizabeth Macquarie, wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. According to local folklore she used to sit here and watch for ships arriving from Britain, though whether she actually did so as often as the story suggests is impossible to confirm — what's certain is that the rock seat, and the three-mile carriage road built between 1813 and 1816 to reach it, still mark the edge of what is now Mrs Macquarie's Point inside the Royal Botanic Garden.
The Rocks, another real stop on this private day, is where European Sydney effectively began: when the First Fleet arrived in January 1788, the governor and free settlers took the more orderly eastern side of the Tank Stream, while the sandstone slopes to the west — later named for the rock itself — became the convicts' quarter, worked in leg irons to clear land and raise the colony's first permanent buildings. At the other end of the day, Bondi Beach carries a very different piece of real history: in 1906, lifesavers there trialled the surf reel that became standard rescue equipment on beaches across the country, and by February 1907 the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club was recognised as Australia's first organised surf lifesaving club — a model that spread to Manly, Coogee, and Maroubra within a year.
The Royal Botanic Garden itself, worked into the day's route, traces its official founding to 13 June 1816, the day Mrs Macquarie's Road was completed — making it the oldest scientific institution in Australia, predating the appointment of the colony's first Colonial Botanist, Charles Fraser, by a year. Add in The Gap's dramatic ocean cliffs at Watsons Bay, and this 8-hour private day genuinely covers more than two centuries of Sydney's story, paced entirely around what your own group wants to linger over.
