The Hunter Valley is widely recognised as Australia's first commercial wine region, with the earliest vineyard plots planted along the Hunter River in the early 1820s and the first vines in the ground by 1823. James Busby, often credited as a founding figure of the Australian wine industry, returned from a trip through Europe in 1832 with around 500 vine cuttings — including Syrah sourced from the Hermitage hill in France's Rhône Valley — that helped establish varieties the region still grows today.
Early pioneers, including George Wyndham at Dalwood, William Kelman at Kirkton and James King at Irrawang, expanded those first plantings through the 19th century, and by the 1920s the Hunter had become Australia's established centre of premium wine production — a two-centuries-long head start that's a genuine reason the region still carries real weight among Australian wine regions today.
Because this particular tour is led by a WSET-certified host with no commercial ties to any winery, the tastings and commentary draw on that same long regional history without a financial incentive to steer the day toward any one producer's wines — stops span both the Hunter Valley proper and the smaller, less-visited Wollombi Valley nearby.
