Sydney Harbour isn't a simple bay — it's what geologists call a ria, a river valley carved into sandstone over millions of years and then flooded by rising sea levels around 17,000 years ago. That drowned-valley origin is why the harbour forks into three major arms (Sydney Harbour proper, Middle Harbour, and the Parramatta River) plus dozens of smaller bays, rather than being one straight stretch of water, and it's exactly why a 90-minute cruise can take in so much visual variety in a relatively short time.
