Lunch on this tour is served at a genuinely historic address: the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Rushcutters Bay. The club traces its origins to June 1944, when a small group of Sydney yachtsmen met at a photographic studio on Castlereagh Street and decided to form a club dedicated to ocean racing, soon acquiring a boatshed on Rushcutters Bay that remains the club's home today.
The club's most famous legacy began almost by accident. In May 1945, visiting British naval officer Commander John Illingworth was invited to join a planned cruise to Hobart and is said to have asked, 'Why don't we make a race of it?' That offhand suggestion became the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, now one of the most demanding ocean races in the world and the reason the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is known well beyond Sydney's own sailing community.
Pairing a private sightseeing tour of Sydney with lunch at a working yacht club rather than a standard restaurant is a real point of difference — Rushcutters Bay itself sits just east of the city, a quieter harbour inlet that's easy to miss from the water-facing stops most visitors reach on foot, and the club's dining room looks directly out over the moorings where Sydney-Hobart entrants are still prepared each December.
