Oxford Street's status as Sydney's LGBTQ+ heart has a real, hard-won history behind it. On 24 June 1978, as part of an international day marking the Stonewall riots, several hundred people marched from Town Hall toward Hyde Park in what became the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Police, who had initially approved the march, confiscated the lead truck at Whitlam Square and ordered the crowd to disperse; the confrontation that followed resulted in 53 arrests, and the names, addresses, and occupations of those arrested were published in the media afterward, costing some their jobs and homes. It wasn't until 2016 that NSW Police formally apologised for how that night was handled.
That history is part of what this walk is built around, led by a drag queen genuinely rooted in the local scene rather than a general tour guide reciting it secondhand. Real, still-operating venues on the route — House of Priscilla, Aussie Boys, Bookshop Darlinghurst, the Stonewall Hotel, and the Oxford Hotel — trace the precinct's evolution from that confrontational first march into the established commercial and social strip it is today, still the centre of the annual Mardi Gras parade each year.
Walking the route with a local drag performer as guide gives the tour a perspective that a conventional history walk can't easily replicate — real stories about the neighbourhood's bars, shops, and community institutions, told by someone who's actually part of that community, rather than a general-interest summary of it.
