The Three Sisters — the three sandstone pinnacles rising above the Jamison Valley near Katoomba — are usually introduced to visitors at Echo Point through a Dreamtime-style legend: that three sisters, named Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, were turned to stone by a tribal elder to protect them during a conflict, and have remained frozen because the elder who could reverse the spell was killed in the fighting. It's worth knowing that more than one version of this story exists — the Gundungurra people, the traditional custodians of the valley, tell their own account centred on an Elder named Tyawan, and the specific telling most often repeated to visitors today was popularised relatively recently rather than passed down unchanged for centuries.
Whichever version is told, the real geology behind the formation is well documented. The sandstone was laid down roughly 230 to 290 million years ago as the Sydney Basin formed, then eroded over about 200 million years by wind, rain and rivers working along natural joints in the rock until the weaker sections collapsed away, leaving the three resistant peaks standing. Meehni, the tallest, rises 922 metres above sea level, with Wimlah at 918 metres and Gunnedoo at 906 metres.
This particular tour is built around arriving at those same lookouts for sunset, when the sandstone takes on deep orange and red tones as the light drops — and when the Blue Mountains' wildlife, including kangaroos and koalas, tends to become noticeably more active and far easier to spot than during the heat of the day.
