The Greater Blue Mountains Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, covering just over one million hectares of sandstone plateaus, deep canyons and eucalypt forest west of Sydney. The region's famous "blue" tint is a genuine optical effect rather than a figure of speech: fine droplets of oil released by the dozens of eucalyptus species growing here mix with dust and water vapour in the air, scattering blue wavelengths of light and giving the ranges their characteristic haze when seen from a distance.
That UNESCO listing exists specifically because of the area's eucalypt diversity and the range of habitats those forests support, from damp sheltered gullies to exposed sandstone heath. This tour's genuine rainforest walk moves through exactly that kind of varied bushland, rather than keeping to the roadside lookouts most day visitors never leave.
Most Blue Mountains day tours stop briefly at Echo Point, photograph the Three Sisters, and turn back toward Sydney. This one is built to go further: real time spent walking under the forest canopy, followed by a proper picnic stop with sourdough and seasonal salads, instead of a quick photo and an early drive home.
