Sydney Harbour and the land around it have been cared for continuously by Aboriginal people for more than 65,000 years — long before the harbour even took its current shape, let alone before British settlement in 1788. The Gadigal people, whose traditional Country includes the southern harbour foreshore around today's CBD and Sydney Cove, are among several Eora Nation clans with deep, continuous ties to this exact stretch of water. Traditional life here depended on the harbour itself, with men spearing fish from the shoreline and women line-fishing from bark canoes known as nawi, and with oysters, mussels, and cockles gathered along the foreshore.
Depending on the route flown, this helicopter charter crosses the traditional Country of different clans within the broader Eora Nation and neighbouring language groups who have lived along the harbour and its surrounds for tens of thousands of years — among them the Cammeraygal and Guringai peoples of the Lower North Shore, and the Bidjigal, Dharawal, and Gweagal peoples further south and west, around the Georges River and Botany Bay.
Opening the flight with a genuine Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony follows a real, living Aboriginal tradition rather than a performance staged for tourists. A Welcome to Country is a formal acknowledgement of the traditional owners of the land, performed by a member of the relevant Aboriginal clan or language group, while the accompanying smoking ceremony — burning native plants to produce smoke believed to cleanse and protect — is specifically about preparing visitors to enter Country respectfully. Experiencing both with an Aboriginal-owned operator, rather than as an add-on to an otherwise unrelated tour, keeps the practice genuinely in the hands of the community it belongs to.
