Summit Avenue is described as the longest stretch of Victorian-era homes in the United States: about 373 of its original 440 houses survive along roughly 4.5 miles. The James J. Hill House, completed in 1891 in Richardsonian Romanesque style by the Boston firm Peabody, Stearns and Furber, was at the time the largest and most expensive home in Minnesota, at about 36,000 square feet.
The Cathedral of Saint Paul at the east end was designed by Emmanuel Louis Masqueray and built between 1906 and 1915; its dome, about 120 feet wide, is a steel frame clad in clay tile and copper. Seen from Summit Avenue it dominates the skyline of the hill.
Walking at a measured pace is the best way to notice what the street's stylistic variety says about the people who built it, from railroad fortunes to lumber and flour money.
