F. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 at 481 Laurel Avenue, in St. Paul's Cathedral Hill district, and lived there only until he was about two. He returned as a young man, and in the summer of 1919 finished revising his first novel at his parents' rowhouse at 599 Summit Avenue, where he learned that Scribner's had accepted This Side of Paradise.
The route is a literary map of the neighbourhood he knew rather than a museum visit, with Summit Avenue, parks and clubs standing in for the settings of his youth. Much of it is exterior, so the pleasure lies in the stories your guide tells at each address.
Because the tour is a short walk, it pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby James J. Hill House, which has its own architecture-focused walking tour.
