The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a one-way road of about 5.5 miles climbing from Gatlinburg through old-growth forest beside a mountain stream. It is narrow and slow, which suits a guided Jeep far better than an impatient drive.
Preserved buildings line the route. The Ephraim Bales cabin, a two-room dogtrot built around 1865, housed Bales, his wife Minerva and their nine children, and the nearby Alfred Reagan place is a more colourful homestead whose mill still sits above the creek bed, with Reagan also running a store and building coffins when needed.
Place of a Thousand Drips is a wet-weather waterfall along the trail, so how impressive it looks depends heavily on recent rain.
